A monopod is used if you need greater stability in the vertical plane (up and down) usually uses a feature-heavy.
They are used by sports photographers for the most part, which must often be used only in large heavy 2.8 mm lens, requiring 400 a certain amount of movement, but also require a degree of stability in the hand "speeds used.

With the relatively long targets (physical) hand in hand is not really practical, because they are uncomfortable and difficult. Even in public places too much tension on the mountain.
A monopod is a convenient way to give some support, long retention of most of the mobility of subtleties.
At one point, a photographer must be a compromise between absolute stability and mobility. Mono Pod Rock Solid does not hold the camera. But I will give additional stability to the hand.
So, sports photographers using mono-pod, so that the operation can continue (or to leave their weapons to rest for the heavy camera).
Good luck ...
In between is a monopod
He bends over a small tripod, and is easier to move
Yes, it's as good as a tripod, but better than pocket
works, but to a lesser extent
The monopod is used by the photographers of the action or in a situation where they desperately needed a break, but have yet to rotate the camera quickly
Stands are still images, moving images, such as monopod for sports or weddings, etc.
I use mine to stabilize my long lens. I do not use the camera.
